Avard T. Fairbanks, Lehi-Nephi Panel, 1961, Bas relief stone, 128 1/4 x 91 1/2 in.
Location: Level 3, Central Lobby, Northeast Study Area
Bas relief carved in pink Minnesota granite depicting Lehi and Nephi from the Book of Mormon. This panel is a companion to the Mormon and Moroni panel, also erected by the side of the main entrance to the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University. “Similar to the companion piece, the trees and the lettering are conventionalized to correspond to the style of ancient Central American decorative design.” This panel illustrates Lehi and his son Nephi, and also depicting a compass (known as Liahona), which would guide them from Jerusalem and the wilderness, to the Americas, the promised land.
