Monolith to Ko’o Lau

Fidalis Buehler, Monolith to Ko’o Lau, 2009, Oil on canvas, 234 x 164 cm

Location: Stairwell between Level 4 and Level 5

Painting of a large mountain against a blue, gray, and pink sky. The mountain appears to be covered in trees and other plants with waterfalls running down it, as demonstrated by the thick, chaotic brushstrokes.

Fidalis Buehler received his MFA from Brigham Young University where he currently works as a professor of Visual Arts in the College of Fine Arts and Communications at BYU. He is heavily influenced by both his childhood living in the South Pacific and his Polynesian heritage. All of Buehler’s art is connected in some way to his memories, especially of his childhood. Buehler is a prominent artist both in Utah and across the nation.

This work was part of “Village of Catatonia”, an exhibition in the Harold B. Lee Library in 2008.
