Artists' Statement

This exhibition showcases the creative work of students in SPAN 355: Cultures of Spanish America, a course that explores Latin American history, identity, resistance, and expression through experiential learning. Each piece on display represents the culmination of a semester-long research project in which students investigated a cultural, historical, or political theme and translated their findings into a traditional artwork form or practice. From political posters to clay figures, textile arts, artisan crafts, music, and video, these works reflect a deep engagement with Latin American traditions and contemporary issues. Blending scholarship with hands-on making, the exhibition invites viewers to consider how art can serve as both research and resistance, and how cultural memory is preserved, reimagined, and shared through creative practice.
