In the spring of 2023, this group of five faculty and five students from the BYU Department of Art traveled to Japan on a creative research and mentoring trip. The group traveled to several cultural and historical sites in Japan, and studied the country’s distinctive conceptual and aesthetic values. The work in this exhibition represents each group member’s artistic response to this experience. One of the primary activities for the group was an intensive collaborative paper-making workshop at the renowned Awagami Factory in Tokushima. Several of the artworks included in the exhibition are done on paper made by group members at the workshop. This trip and the resulting exhibition demonstrate the significance of international experiences and cross-cultural learning in the field of art. The combination of travel, cultural immersion, and creative exploration can greatly enrich an artist's perspective and work.
